Meet the Participating Mentors

Caren Florance (AUS)

Screen Shot 2020-12-07 at 1.02.34 pm.png

Caren Florance works creatively with text and print in many different ways, but books remain close to her heart.

Dissatisfied with traditional publishing relationships, her PhD at the University of Canberra (2013-18) explored collaborative experiments with poets and poetics using a range of analogue and digital print processes. Her interests include:

  • the history of the book and the contemporary role of the artist book

  • print culture and its intersections with creative culture

  • materiality in visual art and writing

  • the influence of technical processes upon writing and visual expression

  • print-performance and page-performance

  • glitch, error and accident

  • the intersection of analogue and digital processes

Caren’s teaching expertise is sited in book arts, text art and typography, vispo, and graphic design. She teaches her students to use the book form to augment their practice, not dominate it.

She works predominantly with relief printmaking, both press-based and hand-printed. Other forms of mark-making find its way into her work, particularly via revisitings of old technologies. Digital processes are increasingly of interest.

Ampersand Duck is an umbrella for many activities. It sometimes publishes in partnership with Recent Work Press.

Caren is a sessional lecturer for the ANU School of Art & Design’s Printmedia & Drawing Workshop as well as for Visual Communications, Heritage and Environment, and Creative Writing at the Faculty of Arts & Design, University of Canberra. She is an Accredited Professional Member of Craft ACT, and a member of the Print Council of Australia, the Bibliographic Society of Australian & NZ. In 2018 she was a Donald Horne Creative and Cultural Fellow at the University of Canberra and one of two  Critics-in-Residence at ANCA Gallery, Canberra.

Heather Burness (AUS)

image-asset 3.52.54 pm.jpeg

Heather Burness is an Australian artist working in print based processes. Her work focuses on the ephemeral experience and phenomena of ‘place’, engaging with specific sites through in-field installations of printing plates. These later become printing surfaces for works-on-paper in her studio. She captures the marks of the flow of water, mist, low-lying clouds, fog, shorelines, groundwater, rivers, soils, atmospheric conditions and the meeting of fresh and saltwater. She is influenced by local Indigenous knowledge and Western scientific thinking.

Heather was awarded The Capital Arts Patrons’ Organisation (CAPO) Fellowship in 2011. She has a Master of Philosophy from the School of Art at the Australian National University (ANU), 2004, and has exhibited nationally and in group exhibitions internationally. She has works in the collections of Australian regional galleries, the State Library of New South Wales, the National Library of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia.
